UCSF - LOBBY - The Precision Cancer Medicine Building
Bookshelf:
This custom made artwork speaks about the unique and caring nature of UCSF, including the staff, patients, and visitors to the hospital. The titles/front book covers varies in theme since we are dedicating different shelf levels to different age groups. We are strategically placing objects for children on the lower shelf, where it will be easier for them to view the artwork. The remaining shelves moving upwards includes objects for teens and adults in various stages of life, ending with the top shelf having objects that relate to the elderly.
We found great joy making some of the objects and fictitious book titles, since we get to use our imagination and our own ideas inspired by our research. Our goal with the piece is that we created something that will not only be fascinating to look at, but will also encourage conversation between people from all ages and cultures. We wish to inspire new stories as well as inspire the sharing of knowledge among viewers.
The artwork is colorful and custom made specially for UCSF and at the same time beautifully crafted with a human touch.
Colorful Landscape:
A landscape can be a powerful subject matter, and using it in art can be an incredible tool to create atmosphere and to evoke a wide spectrum of emotions in the viewer. The landscape can also be used to capture a beautiful moment and to document natural events.
By including figures throughout the landscape, we aim to evoke a sense of community and togetherness, which has been a common theme in our work from the beginning. We looked for inspiration from old masters who often used an outdoor narrative that is easily understood by all viewers, such as Seurat’s famous piece “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte.”
We are not only looking to create figures at leisure in the landscape, but we also want to give the viewers some unexpected and unique characters. The viewer can explore the work and find aspects of the scene that they might not have noticed at first glance and hopefully, for that moment disappear into a magical world “outside” the hospital walls.
